Generasi Gigih is a Bootcamp program provided by Yayasan Anak Bangsa Bisa and Gojek, to improve the hard skills and soft skills of Indonesia’s future tech talents. This program consists of various exercises that can be accessed by participants including Progate, XL Axiata E-learn, and Cakap.

Not only providing learning materials for the participants, Generasi Gigih also hosts an amazing webinar called Ignite Series. There are 3 sessions in this webinar with different topics and speakers.

  1. Ignite Series #1: Getting ahead by learning to unlearn and relearn

First Ignite Webinar Hosted by Ms.Aleisha Fiona. This series explained the importance of Learn, Unlearn, and Relearn, which can improve the learning method. Learning is the process of acquires new knowledge or information that we didn’t know before. And the desire to learn new things is a very important skill, especially for today’s programmers. After learning that new knowledge, we need to continue our learning process by doing unlearning. By removing some knowledge from our memory allows us to learn new things that we need to learn at the moment. And the last step in our learning method is relearning. This will restructure our understanding of knowledge and increase our understanding.

With the right learning method, we will improve the quality of learning, leading us to have a growth mindset. And no less important is to set our learning targets and monitoring the progress over time, because consistency in learning every day is more important than the amount we learn in just one night.

2. Ignite Series #2: What to Prepare to be a Change Maker

The second Ignite Webinar talked about What To Prepare To Be A Change Maker with Mr.Kevin Aluwi, Co-Founder and CEO of Gojek, and Mr.Tara Baskara, System Engineer at Gojek. Mr.Kevin talked a lot about many obstacles he experienced in the early years of establishing Gojek. Starting from the difficulty of finding investors because the ojek business was not promising at that time, refusal from local drivers to the Gojek drivers which ended in a physical fight and financial problems that can lead to Gojek bankruptcy. But all those things didn’t make Mr. Kevin just give up. In fact, Mr. Kevin managed to make Gojek one of the biggest technology companies in Indonesia and create millions of new jobs for the people of Indonesia.

So, what steps can we take to become a change maker? Mr. Kevin explained that everyone can be a change-maker, starting from increasing awareness of the surrounding environment. In the early days, Gojek only operates in Jakarta because of traffic jams around Mr. Kevin. In conclusion, all change makers start by changing small things around them, and with time the changes will continue to grow. So start taking small steps, because 1 step is better than no steps at all.

The third Ignite Webinar talked about Self Learning 101 For Tech Talent with Mr.Opan Mustopah, System Engineer at GoPay. Mr. Opan shares tips & tricks on self-study as new tech talent. By doing self-study, a technology talent can develop and adapt quickly according to industry needs. So, What are the tips & tricks?

  1. Set your learning goal, by having an end goal. We will be more motivated in learning, and it’s also important to reward ourselves when we’ve finished it.
  2. Learn enough and know when to stop, when we feel that we have learned enough. Try to challenge ourselves with practice. With lots of practice, we will have a better understanding of the knowledge.
  3. Trying freelance, freelancing is a form of challenging yourself to measure the extent of your knowledge. Freelance can also add experience that will be useful in the future.

Apart from the above, Mr. Opan also emphasized that learning fundamentals are important. Because programmers must be able to adapt to technology that is developing very quickly. Having a mentor who can guide us will be very beneficial after learning the fundamentals. When we are satisfied with the knowledge we have. don’t forget to share the knowledge and also contribute to the open-source.

Thanks to all the Ignite Series has given me new knowledge and insight. And a big thank you to the Generasi Gigih for the opportunity to join in on this extraordinary journey. 🙏
